In his recent <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Discover Spain<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">2024<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Special Report<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">, co-written with <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Decanter<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> writer <\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">Beth Willard<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">, Atkin reflects on his latest trip to Spain, during which they tasted what they describe as \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">some interesting things we missed first time around\u201d<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">. This time, the wine critics tasted 648 samples. Of these, only 205 wines obtained 90 points or more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"es-ES-u-co-trad\" align=\"justify\"><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">LoAlto Bobal 2023<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\"> achieved an impressive <\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">93 points<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">. This estate wine (vino de paraje) reflects the landscape where the vines are grown. During the production process, a third of the grapes were placed in vats for fermentation with whole bunches, and then the wine was gently aged for six months in French oak foudres. Atkin says it is a warm, mature red wine with fresh acidity in which <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201cviolets and red cherry fruit lead to dark fruit, a touch of balsamic and licorice.\u201d<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"es-ES-u-co-trad\" align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><strong>LoAlto Tardana 2023<\/strong>,<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> a<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">white wine made with the minority Tardana grape variety that ferments <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">in stainless steel and rests in concrete tanks for six months, also scored 93 points. Atkin and Willard stress its \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">very Valencian character, loaded with orange aromas and ripe, sunny fruit&#8230;this is a pure and vibrant expression of the grape\u201d.<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> They highlight its sensation of <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201cblood orange and pith with a dry, savoury finish and a touch of grip\u201d.<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"es-ES-u-co-trad\" align=\"justify\"><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">LoAlto Garnacha 2023<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\"> achieves a magnificent <\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">92 Points<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">. This is a red wine made with Garnacha grapes grown on chalky clay soil. As with the other wines, the grapes are harvested manually and some whole bunches are used. The wine is aged for eight months in concrete tanks, without pressing and without using steel or oak. In the tasting, critics note <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201cburnt orange, peach syrup, red berries and herbal notes make for a heady bouquet that speaks of both the warm Mediterranean and mountain freshness. Subtle reduction adds to the wine\u2019s complexity.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"es-ES-u-co-trad\" align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Finally, <\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">LoAlto Los \u00c1lamos Garnacha Blanca 2023<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\"> stood out with <\/span><strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">90 points<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-GB\">. <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">The grapes for this exclusive wine come from a single plot called Los \u00c1lamos on part of the estate with a clay soil base. The wine is aged for eight months in cement tanks and French oak, which adds complexity. \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">Boiled sweets, pear and dried herbs make for an expressive white that also offers impressive texture and minerality.
